Materials Chemistry and Engineering, MSc

Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary field that involves the design, preparation and implementation of new materials, with an emphasis on the solid state.  This field incorporates many aspects of “pure” STEM fields, such as chemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics, etc. to address crucial scientific problems faced by society that arise from limitations of the materials that are currently available and to discover new materials that can drive the creation of new industries.  While Materials Chemistry focuses on the relationship between the atomic or molecular structure of a material with its physical properties, Materials Engineering focuses on this structure-property relationship, but with a much greater emphasis on materials properties, such as strength, durability, electrical, thermal, and optical characteristics, etc. In short, Materials Engineers identify and articulate the materials needed to solve problems, and Materials Chemists use this insight to design and develop new materials that can then be implemented to solve problems.  The Master of Materials Chemistry and Engineering (MMCE) will provide students with a solid theoretical and applied foundation in both Materials Chemistry and Materials Engineering, enabling them to gain successful careers in materials science and engineering. Along with the interdisciplinary technical expertise, students will learn and gain experience in business plan development and implementation related to Materials Science and Engineering industries, preparing them for a wide range of career opportunities worldwide, from sales and marketing to research and development, to manufacturing and quality control.
