Complex Project Leadership, GDip (Type 3)
The Graduate Diploma in Complex Project Leadership will develop leadership and project management skills for practicing managers who are responsible for large, complex projects that typically span several years. These projects include for example, the construction of railways, highways, and ships as well as large procurements in areas such as national defence, civilian infrastructure, and safety. These projects are critical to the well being and quality of life of citizens. Indeed, McKinsey Consulting estimates a global spend of $57 trillion on such projects by 2030. Yet, research at the Oxford business school estimates that nine out of ten such projects go over budget and are delivered late if at all. Project complexity, poor execution, and lack of organizational capabilities are contributing factors to project failure. Research by the International Centre for Complex Project Management (ICCPM) provides more details on these failure factors: inability to coordinate stakeholder needs, political and public relations pressure, lack of understanding of non-technical risk, and decision making processes not well-aligned with conditions of uncertainty. One of the solutions proposed by the ICCPM is better education in the field of complex project management. The Diploma in Complex Project Leadership is based on ICCPM competency recommendations for managers of complex projects. The core competencies identified include systems thinking, decision making under conditions of uncertainty, stakeholder and risk management, and managing financial and human resources in complex rapidly changing work environments. This 15-credit diploma focuses on these core competencies that have been proven to enable the success of large complex projects. This program is offered in English but, in keeping with the bilingual nature of the University of Ottawa, students may submit their work in English or in French.
