Medical Education Program, MD
The Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) program, leading to a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, is designed to educate and graduate future physicians with a strong focus on serving the primary care needs of diverse and medically underserved populations. The program aims to educate and graduate future physicians who will focus their careers on addressing the primary care needs of diverse and medically underserved populations. It will be housed in the new School of Medicine, located in Brampton, Ontario.
This four-year undergraduate MD program will equip physicians to meet the diverse healthcare needs of their communities, with a focus on Canada’s healthcare system, while also exploring global health challenges. The curriculum is divided into three phases: Phase 1 builds a strong foundation in basic, clinical, social, and health systems sciences, with a focus on anti-racism, equity, and understanding systemic inequities in healthcare; Phase 2 immerses students in hands-on clinical learning including a Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship in Family Medicine, as well as specialty rotations such as psychiatry, emergency care, and elder care; and Phase 3 prepares students for residency through electives, post-graduate study preparation, and a self-directed learning block.
Students will engage with key topics such as healthcare equity, health systems innovation, community-based medicine, and interprofessional collaboration. They will also explore Indigenous health, rural and remote healthcare, and the challenges of underserved populations, fostering a deep understanding of the social determinants of health and the importance of delivering culturally competent care. This innovative curriculum also incorporates advancements in digital health and technology, preparing future physicians to adapt to the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape. Graduates will emerge as leaders in healthcare, advocating for health system improvements and working to enhance health outcomes for all, with a particular focus on underserved populations. The program’s unique approach ensures that TMU-trained physicians are prepared to address both local and global healthcare challenges, positioning them to lead in improving the future of healthcare.
