International Education Studies, BA (Honours)
The Honours BA in International Education Studies (BIES) is an interdisciplinary program built upon a partnership between the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Arts, Department of Global Studies. This degree does not culminate in Ontario teacher certification, but equips students with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills both for teaching in international schools and for work in other sectors with education-related missions, such as international development or post-conflict peacebuilding.
The BIES degree combines training from multiple disciplinary perspectives, including critical social science and humanities training from Global Studies and an inter-cultural, social justice informed approach to pedagogy from Education. It includes an international placement and study of a second language as core components to cultivate affinity for intercultural communication, social justice and diversity. In addition to core credits in both Global Studies and Education, students will also complete one Canadian placement, one international placement, online credits leading to an International Teaching Certificate (ITC) offered by the Educational Collaborative for International Schools (ECIS), and have the option to complete the Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) (Standard 1) certification, offered by Conestoga College.
